MATCH REPORT: TILBURY 3-0 NEWMARKET TOWN

Tilbury 3

Newmarket Town 0

Tilbury moved to within five points of the top five to keep their slim playoff hopes alive with a 3-0 win over relegation threatened Newmarket Town.

A trio of first-half goals for the Dockers through Harrison Day, Alex Hernandez and Darren Phillips secured a routine victory for the Essex side against their Suffolk opponents.

 Kick-Off

Three goals in the space of 13 minutes for Tilbury got underway with Day netting for the second home game running after 26 minutes.

Lindell Stewart poked the ball across the face of goal and, following some confusion between Newmarket goalkeeper and defender James Young and Henry Hall who both left the ball for each other to deal with, the Dagenham & Redbridge loanee ghosted in to slide home at the back post.

Seven minutes later the Dockers doubled their lead with top scorer Hernandez notching his 24th goal of the campaign.

After Ben Robinson misjudged the bounce of the ball just inside the Tilbury half, the hosts were able to quickly break with a three versus one attack, and Day teed up Hernandez whose 20-yard effort, with the help of the wind, flew into the top corner.

Marc Harrison's side continued to dominate with the woodwork coming to Newmarket's rescue.

Macauley Joynes dinked in a cross that was headed against the crossbar from close range by Oliver Spooner, the Jockeys could only clear as far as Hernandez whose volley had to be turned behind down low by a diving Young.

Two minutes later however the home side did find a third goal.

An inswinging corner from Joynes had to be clawed away by Young to the back post where the ball was headed back across goal and into the far corner by Phillips.

This was the defender's third goal for the club since signing from fellow Isthmian North outfit Maldon & Tiptree.

Half Time: Tilbury 3-0 Newmarket Town

Midway through the second half there was a lengthy stoppage with the referee pulling up and having to be replaced with his linesman.

Five minutes after the restart Tilbury's Tom Middlehurst produced a good save to tip over Josh Lee's volley.

In the latter stages the hosts were unable to add to their tally for the afternoon but went close with Stewart hitting the post and Young producing a brilliant reaction save to deny Day having parried Dan Trendall's cross into the path of the teenager.

A sixth straight home win for the Dockers moves them onto 69 points, however 5th place Brightlingsea Regent got a 90+10 minute equaliser to draw at Waltham Abbey and move themselves onto 74 points with two games left to play.

As for Newmarket, an end to their four game unbeaten run means they remain inside the relegation zone a point from safety following Haringey Borough's 4-0 win at Concord Rangers on Good Friday.

Next up for Tilbury is a local derby with Grays Athletic on Easter Monday, whilst Newmarket entertain fellow strugglers Wroxham knowing that a loss could send them down.
