Ramsgate 2
Horndean 0
Ramsgate moved into the playoff places with a sixth straight win in all competitions as Ben Smith's side cruised to a comfortable 2-0 win over Horndean.
It was a quiet affair in Kent for the most part but an Alfie Paxman freekick and a Joe Taylor strike 15 minutes from time was enough to earn the three points for the Rams and move them up to 3rd.
Kick-Off
Following a slow start to the game it was the hosts who broke the deadlock six minutes before the break through first half substitute A. Paxman.
The former Dover Athletic forward had a freekick 20 yards from goal that he hit low, sneaking under the wall and into the bottom corner for his third goal of the season.
Three minutes later Ramsgate almost doubled their lead when a deep Benedict Bioletti cross picked out the unmarked A. Paxman, but the goal scorer's volley went across goal and wide.
Despite this, Horndean were unlucky not to go in at half time level with home goalkeeper Tom Hadler having to make an impressive save to keep the Hampshire-club at bay.
Portsmouth loanee Harvey Laidlaw pinged the ball down the line for top scorer Zack Willett who cut inside and curled an effort towards the far corner that Hadler had to tip behind.
Half Time: Ramsgate 1-0 Horndean
The second half would see Ramsgate dominate proceedings with the hosts having countless attempts go off target, the most notable being a drilled Jordan Green strike across goal that went just wide.
However, as the game entered its final quarter Ramsgate gave themselves some breathing space thanks to the ever prolific Taylor.
Skipper Mike West threaded the ball in behind for Taylor and the 32-year-old shrugged off his man and drilled home into the far corner for his 18th goal of the campaign and his sixth in five games.
Ramsgate could've extended their lead further in injury time when a corner routine straight off the training ground saw A. Paxman's near post delivery pick out Lee Martin whose fierce strike stung the palms of Cameron Scott.
Full Time: Ramsgate 2-0 Horndean
Three points for the Rams means they have now won eight of their past nine matches in all competitions as they move to within eight points of unbeaten league leaders Three Bridges.
As for Horndean, a fifth defeat in seven games means they miss out on the chance to record back-to-back wins for the first time this season - they remain 16th in the table.
