MATCH REPORT: CARSHALTON ATHLETIC 1-1 LEWES

Carshalton Athletic 1

Lewes 1

Carshalton Athletic were left to rue a plethora of missed opportunities in the second half to settle for a share of the spoils with an in-form Lewes side.

Prior to kick-off Carshalton were winless in seven games whilst Lewes had won four of their last five, and it looked as though their respective run of forms would continue when Deon Moore gave the visitors the lead, against his former club, just past the half hour mark.

However, Danny Bassett would equalise on the stroke of half time with the hosts going on to dominate the second period yet somehow failed to find a winner.

Kick-Off

It was a lively start in South London with the hosts' Oluwabunmi Babajide and Matt Everitt both sending edge of the box attempts just wide.

Lewes would have the first shot on target after 21 minutes with Daniel O'Donovan being forced into a smart save.

Jake Elliott went on a mazy run forward and linked up with Ola Ogunwamide on the left hand side.

The pair would play a neat one-two with Elliott cutting inside and firing an effort towards goal that O'Donovan had to get down to in order to parry away.

However, the former Sutton Common Rovers goalkeeper wouldn't be able to keep Lewes at bay when they next threatened.

Antigua and Barbuda international Keiran Murtagh played a brilliant defence splitting pass across to Ogunwamide and the former Concord Rangers winger's cross to the far post was tapped home by former Robin striker Moore - for his second goal in as many games.

The Rooks almost doubled their lead within three minutes with O'Donovan being called into action to prevent the visitors from going further ahead.

Bromley loanee Marcus Sablier found Murtagh in midfield with a lofted pass, and the 34-year-old struck a fierce spinning volley from range that had to be beaten away by the Carshalton goalkeeper.

It looked as though if anyone was going to score before half time it would be Lewes. However, with one minute left of normal time to play the hosts levelled the scores with their first shot on target of the evening.

A fantastic pinged pass from Kwaku Frimpong picked out Bassett and Carshalton's top scorer chested the ball down, cut inside and lashed an unstoppable strike into the far top corner for his seventh strike of the season.

Half Time: Carshalton Athletic 1-1 Lewes

Lewes had the first chance of the second half when Sablier's long range effort whistled just over, but this was the only threatening opportunity Tony Russell's side would have until late on.

Two minutes later Carshalton almost made it 2-1 in bizzare fashion. The Robins almost scored directly from a corner with Bradford's near post delivery hitting the foot of the post.

Within a minute of this the Robins again went close.

Substitute Kweku Lucan put Ronnie Vint under pressure and did well to dispossess the former Dartford centre back, before bursting into the box and sending a shot into the side netting from a narrow angle.

With 12 minutes left to play Peter Adeniyi's outfit had the best opportunity to win the game with the Robins somehow failing to score from a corner.

A deep delivery from Everitt was headed against the crossbar by Lexus Beeden, with Lewes only scrambling the ball clear as far as Lucan whose volley flew through a sea of bodies and crashed back off the post.

Five minutes later goalkeeper Nathan Harvey had to make a top drawer save to ensure the scores remained level.

A quickly taken Carshalton throw found Everitt who cut inside and whipped a shot goalwards that was destined for the top corner, but Gillingham loanee Harvey kept it out with a fine diving save.

As the game approached injury time Moore and Tom Beere would have long range efforts saved as both teams searched for a winner.

The two minutes into injury time Carshalton were unable to profit upon a huge mistake from Harvey.

The teenage goalkeeper came a long way off his line to try and clear a loose ball but was beaten to it by Lucan, the substitute's shot was blocked on the line by Elliott and Beere then fired over the rebound.

Full Time: Carshalton Athletic 1-1 Lewes

A point for Carshalton sees them jump up to two places to third, but they are now winless in eight games and haven't won at the War Memorial Ground since mid-September.

As for Lewes a draw means they miss out on the chance to move into the playoffs and they are now winless in three games on the road.
