MATCH REPORT: BROMLEY 2-1 SOUTHEND UNITED

Bromley 2

Southend United 1

Southend United fell to a second successive away defeat with Kevin Maher's men falling to a 2-1 defeat at Bromley.

Louis Dennis profited upon some sloppy defensive play from Harry Taylor to give the Ravens a first half lead; then ten minutes into the second half Michael Cheek doubled their lead.

Noor Husin pulled one back for Blues soon after but it wasn't enough and Bromley edged their way to a first win of the season.

It was a pretty quiet first half in South East London. Harry Cardwell had the first chance of the game when his flicked header from a Jack Bridge corner was saved by the legs of Grant Smith.

Within a minute of this chance Bromley took the lead. A tame Taylor back pass gifted possession to Louis Dennis who rounded Collin Andeng-Ndi and slotted into the unguarded net. This being the second successive season in which Dennis has scored against Blues following his Boxing Day winner at Roots Hall last term.

Ten minutes after the restart the hosts increased their lead through Cheek. A cross field pass picked out the 32-year-old who brought the ball down nicely, cut inside and drilled home an effort that went in off the woodwork. This being Cheek's second goal in as many games following his strike at Rochdale on Friday night.

Southend weren't to be behind for long and within three minutes they had halved the deficit.

A deep corner from Bridge was headed clear by Bromley, only as far as Husin, who rifled the ball through a sea of bodies and past Smith at his near post. Like Cheek this was Husin's second goal in as many games following his opener in Friday's win over Eastleigh.

Blues would huff and puff but failed to break Bromley's resistance.

The closest Blues came to an equaliser was six minutes from time when Smith was called into action by substitute Jack Wood. Cardwell and Coker linked up with a one-two before the former guided the ball in behind for Wood who saw his attempt parried away by Smith.

Defeat for Southend means they remain bottom on minus one point, four points behind 23rd place York City and six points from safety.

A first three points of the campaign for Bromley hoists them out of the relegation zone with Andy Woodman's side climbing up to 17th in the Vanarama National League standings.

Blues are back in action on Saturday as Kidderminster Harriers make the trip to Roots Hall.
