Aveley 3

Potters Bar 1

Aveley leapfrogged Potters Bar to top of the Isthmian Premier Division, as the Millers came from a goal down to win 3-1 thanks to a Brendon Shabani strike and a George Sykes brace.

The first half was a quiet one at Parkside, but it was the visitors who went in at the break 1-0 up. After eight minutes a goal kick from Colchester loanee Ted Collins was chested down by Lewis Manor to Isaac Galliford, and the 25-year-old debutant lashed home a superb volley from just outside the area that looped into the top corner.

Similarly, to the first half, the second period took a while to get going but with 68 minutes on the clock Aveley got themselves on level terms. A sliding Frazer Shaw challenge allowed the ball to break kindly for Shabani, and the 20-year-old’s deflected effort wrong footed Collins and nestled into the bottom corner for his first strike of the season.

With five minutes left on the clock Shabani turned provider delivering a cross to Sykes who was on hand to fire home from close range to turn the game on its head.

Then as the game ticked into injury time and Potters Bar legs began to tire Aveley sealed the three points from the penalty spot. Sykes found substitute Bryan Ifeanyi who went on a breath-taking solo run, dancing away from several challenges and getting himself through one on one with Collins. However, as Ifeanyi tried to round the Scholars goalkeeper Collins brought him down leaving the referee with no choice but to award a penalty and give the 19-year-old a yellow card. This being the second spot kick that Potters Bar have conceded to Aveley this season having also conceded one in the FA Cup tie between the two sides.

Top scorer Sykes stepped up to take the penalty and the former Dartford striker squeezed his spot kick beneath Collins for his second of the night and fourth of the season to seal a 3-1 win for Danny Scopes’ men.

Victory for Aveley, who climb to top of the table, sees them get revenge on a Potters Bar side that dumped the Millers out of the FA Cup last weekend. Three points also means Aveley have won their last three league games, but they are five games without a clean sheet in all competitions.

Defeat for Potters Bar sees the Scholars slip to second as their four-game winning run in all competitions comes to an end.
