MATCH REPORT: AVELEY 2-2 WELLING UNITED

Aveley 2

Welling United 2

Aveley's winless run stretched to six games in the Vanarama National League South with Danny Scopes' side having to settle for a point at home to ten man Welling United.

Welling had taken an early lead through a Tristan Abrahams penalty, but Aveley turned it around before the break.

Welling goalkeeper Reice Charles-Cook brought down Emmanuel Ogunrinde in the box and the goalkeeper was sent off, leaving Anthony Grant in goal and then fellow midfielder Antony Papadopoulos.
Siju Odelusi scored from the spot before Ogunrinde added a second on the stroke of half time.

Despite being a man down Welling were the better side in the second half and they earned a point thanks to a Kai Adom goal just before the hour mark.

Kick-Off

The opening exchanges were quiet at Parkside with Dominic Odusanya firing straight at Jonathan North and Abrahams glancing a header wide for the visitors.

Danny Bloor's men would make this slight dominance count by opening the scoring just past the half hour.

A Jephte Tanga cross broke loose and was latched onto by Gillingham loanee Josh Chambers who was brought down by a lunging Odelusi challenge.

Abrahams took responsibility from the spot and he fired straight down the middle for his sixth goal in five games.

Aveley responded well and equalised through a penalty of their own eight minutes later.

Owen Cochrane curled the ball down the line releasing Ogunrinde in behind and the winger knocked the ball past the onrushing Charles-Cook, but found himself brought down by the Grenada international.

The referee pointed to the spot and sent Charles-Cook off. Former Southend United midfielder Anthony Grant was forced to go in goal for the penalty and he was sent the wrong way by Odelusi to level the scores.

After this Grant returned to his natural midfield position with Chambers being subbed off for Papadopoulos who went in goal for the visitors.

Within two minutes of this change Welling lost their lead in bizarre fashion.

A weak cross from Ogunrinde was left by Papadopoulos and the ball rolled across the face of goal, hit the far post and trickled in to give the Millers a half time lead. This being the 24-year-old's third goal in two games having scored a brace against Farnborough on Saturday.

Half Time: Aveley 2-1 Welling United

Ten minutes into the second period Aveley went close to extending their lead further but were denied by a goal line clearance.

A deep corner was met at the back post by skipper Harry Gibbs and his downward header beat Papadopoulos but was hooked off the line by Abrahams.

The hosts were left to rue this missed opportunity as within a minute Welling were back on level terms.

A long kick forward from Papadopoulos picked out Adom who rounded North, who had come off his line to try and claim the loose ball, and fired a shot back across goal that went in off the far post.

Following this the Wings threatened a third goal with Grant and Abrahams both sending efforts just wide before Odusanya lashed a shot over in injury time following a quick break from the visitors.

Full Time: Aveley 2-2 Welling United

A third draw in four matches for Aveley sees them remain 4th in the table although they could slip down to 7th with three teams below them in action later this week.

The Millers are at home again this Saturday as they host step three outfit Hungerford Town, who were relegated from the National League South last term, in the FA Trophy.
