AFC Sudbury 2
Bury Town 1
AFC Sudbury made it five wins on the spin, as a second half brace from Josh Mayhew set the Suds on their way to a 2-1 derby day win over Bury Town.
The first half was a relatively quiet one at the MEL Group Stadium which was overshadowed by poor discipline from both sides. Five players were booked in the opening 45 minutes with multiple fights breaking out on the pitch between both sets of players.
However, when there was a break in fouls and the hosts were able to launch an effective attack after half an hour they very nearly went 1-0 up. Josh Stokes received play just outside Bury's penalty area and the teenager’s effort hit the foot of the post and came back off Charlie Woods’ back. As a result the ball began trickling back towards the Bury goal but Joe White was able to get back and clear the ball behind for a corner.
With two minutes left of the first period Rick Andrews’ men had another golden opportunity to break the deadlock when a Reece Harris cross from the left picked out an unmarked Harrison Chatting who let fly with an acrobatic half volley which bounced just wide.
The Suds started the second half with a continued dominance and five minutes in Mayhew opened the scoring. Harris picked out the former Stowmarket Town striker in the centre and Mayhew was able to breeze away from his man and lash the ball home beyond Woods.
Just over ten minutes later Sudbury were able to double their lead with Mayhew wheeling away in celebration for the second time of the afternoon. Stokes picked Carlos Edwards’ pocket which allowed the ball to break for Mayhew one-on-one with Woods, and the striker coolly slotted into the far corner for his sixth strike of the campaign.
However, Sudbury’s two goal cushion didn’t last for long and within five minutes the visitors halved the deficit. Former Yellow Cruis Nydazayo burst forward and slid the ball across to Cemal Ramadan and the Irishman slotted the ball past David Hughes from an acute angle for his 18th goal of the season and his second against Sudbury this term.
Three points for the Suds sees the league leaders continue their 100% home record in the league this term as the Yellows make it four games unbeaten against their Suffolk rivals.
Defeat for Bury means the Blues miss out on the chance to move within three points of the playoff positions with Ben Chenery’s side now winless in three on the road.
