MATCH REPORT: SOUTHEND UNITED 1-1 WOKING

 Southend United 1

Woking 1

Southend United stretched their unbeaten run to four games as a second half Marcus Dackers strike earnt Kevin Maher’s men a respectable point against playoff hopefuls Woking.

The opening encounters were fairly scrappy with no side really asserting their dominance. Just past the ten-minute mark Kyran Lofthouse received the ball just inside the Southend half and the Woking winger scampered away from Jake Hyde and Cavaghn Miley before flashing an effort across goal that kissed the foot off the post and went wide.

However just three minutes later, and following some questionable refereeing decisions, the Cards did break the deadlock. A Josh Casey throw picked out Reece Grego-Cox who shrugged off a couple of blue shirts before curling the ball beyond Collin Andeng-Ndi for his fifth goal of the season.

As the half came to an end the visitors went close to doubling their lead but found themselves thwarted by Ndi. A Jermaine Anderson corner was only partially cleared by Hyde and the ball was hooked back in towards Lofthouse whose header from point blank range was superbly clawed away by the Italian born goalkeeper.

The second half was relatively quiet however with 24 minutes left to play at Roots Hall the Shrimpers levelled the scores. A deflected Noor Husin cross found its way to Dackers and the Salford loanee lashed the ball beyond Craig Ross for his third goal in Southend colours; denying Woking of a third consecutive clean sheet.

A point apiece ensures Southend’s hunt for a first home win over Woking goes on as the Shrimpers slip into the bottom half of the table.

Meanwhile for the Cards a draw means they are now three games unbeaten as they remain in the playoff points.

This Saturday Southend take a short trip to Essex rivals Dagenham & Redbridge (a side the Shrimpers lost three times to last season) whilst Woking face a tricky test as they entertain league leaders Notts County.
