Maldon & Tiptree 0
Great Wakering Rovers 3
Maldon & Tiptree’s losing start to the season continued as a ruthless first half performance from the visitors saw Great Wakering Rovers ease to a 3-0 victory over their fellow Essex strugglers.
Despite losing every single league game this term the Jammers started on the front foot and went close to taking the lead after only two minutes. A deflected Kacy Parish cross trickled through to fellow Colchester United loanee Brad Ihionvien but Rovers goalkeeper Harry Fairs got out quickly to block the shot.
However, Maldon’s early brightness didn’t last and within five minutes the Jammers found themselves a goal down. Adam Newton lifted the ball over the top to release Eusebio Da Silva Ca through on goal, and the striker then slotted the ball past Tom Middlehurst to make it 1-0 Rovers.
The rest of the first half was pretty quiet up until the 41st minute when Wakering made it two. An inviting corner from Kewin Kwiek was flicked towards goal by Perry Dunn and, despite the efforts of Lance Akins on the line, the ball ended up in the back of the net.
There was still time for Iain O’Connell’s men to make it three before the interval. A Billy Johnson cross picked out Alex Hernandez who was fouled from behind by debutant Nathan Brown leaving referee Reece Pinchback with no choice but to point to the spot. 19-year-old Hernandez stepped up and just about managed to squeeze his spot kick past Middlehurst – despite the Maldon keeper getting a strong hand to the ball.
Despite being three goals down the Jammers continued to search for a way back into the game in the second period and just past the hour mark Fairs was forced into a couple of quickfire saves. Ihionvien drove forward and drilled a low effort towards goal that Fairs got down to turn behind and from the resulting corner Harvey Sayer’s delivery almost went all the way in, but Fairs got up well to punch away from danger.
Rovers almost made it four as the game entered its final stages. Da Silva Ca continued to be a nuisance for the Maldon backline as he toyed with George Forrest and Joe Turpin before smacking an effort off the woodwork.
Defeat for the managerless Jammers sees them remain rock bottom. However, they can be relieved that Wakering were the only side within eight places of them that won today.
A first away win and clean sheet of the campaign sees Wakering jump up two places to 14th following only their second win in their last 11 encounters with Maldon.
