MATCH REPORT: GRAYS ATHLETIC 2-0 WROXHAM

Grays Athletic 2

Wroxham 0

Wroxham’s hunt for their first league win of the season goes on as the Yachtsmen fell to a third consecutive defeat in the Isthmian Division One North.

It was a relatively stress-free evening for Grays who moved up to third with a win, just two points behind league leaders Lowestoft Town.

Grays’ striker Anointed Chukwa is a man in form with five goals in four games since he re-joined the club from Cheshunt earlier in the month. The 22-year-old nearly made it six in five shortly after kick off. A quickly taken Mitchel Hahn throw-in released Chukwa who shrugged off Robbie Linford before firing an effort against the foot of the post from a tight angle.

However just before the half time interval Chukwa did get his goal. Sam Bantick whipped in a delightful ball to Chukwa who nodded the ball past Norwich City loanee Sam Blair to make it 1-0 to the Gravelmen.

The first half started pretty slowly but the hosts were able to double their advantage just past the hour mark. Against the run of play another impressive cross picked out Bantick who, added to his assist from the first period, looped a header over Blair to make it 2-0 for his sixth strike of the season.

With just under 20 minutes on the clock Lewis Dark’s men almost put the game to bed. Rob Clark rolled off a free kick to Macauley Joynes who let fly from range; the 25-year-old's powerful strike was palmed over by Blair ensuring the game finished only 2-0 to Grays.

A win for Grays means it’s now three on the spin for the Blues who also continued their record of scoring in every single home game this season.

Defeat for Wroxham sees Jordan Southgate’s men slip down a place to 19th whilst their wait for a league win, an away point and an away clean sheet all continue.

Both sides return to action this Saturday with Grays travelling to local rivals Tilbury and Wroxham hosting second place Felixstowe & Walton United.

  3. Grays had to work hard for their win. Wroxham worked hard but failed to put away any chances they made. Grays have recovered well from the disastrous FA Cup defeat in mid September and are pushing on in the Trophy and well-placed in the league at this early stage of the season.
