NATIONAL LEAGUE SOUTH 2022/23 SEASON PREVIEW

2022/23 National League South Season Preview

By Nathan Williams

As the National League South season edges ever closer here is a season preview of how each of the 24 clubs shape up ahead of the new season.

Bath City

2021/22: 18th

Top Scorer: Alex Fletcher (17)

Manager: Jerry Gill

Stadium: Twerton Park (Capacity: 3,528)

2021/22 Average Attendance: 1,144

Last term was a pretty poor one for Bath with the Romans failing to find any consistency however Jerry Gill’s men did end the season by going five games unbeaten.

Following last season's disappointing 18th placed finish, Bath have been quick to recruit ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.

So far Jordan Dyer, Rex Mannings, Dany Hayfield, Luke Spokes, Joe Wright, Scott Wilson and the experienced Chris Lines have been brought in by Jerry Gill; as well as defensive duo Kieran Parselle and Danny Greenslade who both join from local rivals Chippenham.

These additions will certainly strengthen the backbone of this Bath squad with an improved league finish likely.

Key Player

Alex Fletcher

Renewing the services of last season’s top scorer Alex Fletcher was a key bit of business done by the Romans this summer.

The 23-year-old came through the youth ranks at Plymouth Argyle, appearing 15 times for the Pilgrims in the 2017/18 League One season. During his time at Home Park, Fletcher enjoyed loan spells at: Torquay United, Aldershot Town and Tiverton Town; before joining the latter permanently in the summer of 2020.

As a result of an impressive goal scoring record with the Yellows, Fletcher signed for Bath in January 2021. This has proved to be a very shrewd signing with the attacker netting 17 times for the Romans last season.

Star Signing

Kieran Parselle

Former Chippenham Town captain, Parselle arrives at Twerton Park having played a key role in the Bluebirds impressive campaign last season that ended in a playoff semi-final defeat to Ebbsfleet United.

As well as being part of a defence that kept 14 clean sheets last term, Parselle also popped up with four goals

Still only 25 the Bristol born defender came through the youth system at Welsh club Newport County and made a handful of appearances for the Exiles, also enjoying a loan spell at Salisbury City during his time at Rodney Parade.

However, things didn’t work out in South Wales and Parselle was released by the club in 2017 and was quickly snapped up by Gloucester City.

Following a solid season with Gloucester, Parselle joined Chippenham in the summer of 2018 and made over 100 appearances for the Bluebirds prior to his move to Bath this summer.

Braintree Town

2021/22: 17th

Top Scorer: Luke Holness (9)

Manager: Angelo Harrop

Stadium: Cressing Road (Capacity: 4,202)

2021/22 Average Attendance: 505

Last season was Braintree’s first full season back in the National League South following their relegation from the fifth tier in 2019 (the following two seasons ended prematurely due to Covid) and it was a poor one for the Iron.

Braintree never really found any consistency and a 6-0 drubbing at the hands of Eastbourne Borough was a particular low point.

Manager Ryan Maxwell parted ways with the club at the end of the season, and has since been replaced by former AFC Sudbury boss, Angelo Harrop.

Maxwell wasn’t the only man to leave Cressing Road this summer with: Gianni Crichlow, Joe Porter, Marcus Johnson-Schuster, Luke Pennell, Stefan Ilic, Matt Johnson and Ola Wasiri Williams all leaving the Iron; with the latter joining championship outfit Swansea City.

In order to fill these gaps Braintree are going to need to recruit well, and so far have brought in: John White, Ben Fowkes, Alfie Matthews, Matt Rush, Jack Sims, Baris Altintop, Joe Muscatt, Leon Davies, Levi Amantchi and Chris Regis.

Key Player

Billy Johnson

Despite Braintree shipping 54 league goals last season, goalkeeper Billy Johnson played a key role in the Iron’s season- keeping 11 clean sheets.

The 22-year-old started his career with Norwich City enjoying a loan spell with the Iron during his time with the Canaries under 23’s.

In the summer of summer 2020 Johnson would get a move to League Two side Stevenage.

However, things didn’t work out in Hertfordshire with Johnson getting little game time, and was released the following summer before returning to Cressing Road.

Following the signing of former Blackpool and Welling goalkeeper Jack Sims, Johnson will have to be at his best in order to keep the number one shirt.

Star Signing

John White

Following the departure of numerous defenders already this summer the purchase of the experienced John White is a key one for the Iron.

White came through the youth ranks at Colchester making his debut for the U’s in 2004, before going on to make over 200 appearances for the club in nine years.

During this time the 35-year-old helped the U’s win promotion to the Championship.

In 2013 White departed Colchester for their main rivals Southend, despite being offered a contract extension in North Essex, for his second spell at Roots Hall following a loan spell with the Shrimpers in 2009.

In 2015 White captained the Blues to promotion from League Two following a dramatic playoff final penalty shootout victory over Wycombe Wanderers.

After nine years at Roots Hall, White was released this summer before becoming Harrop’s first signing for Braintree.

Chelmsford City

2021/22: 19th

Top Scorer: Simeon Jackson (11)

Manager: Robbie Simpson

Stadium: EMG Inspire Stadium (Capacity: 3,065)

2021/22 Average Attendance: 771

The 2021/22 season saw Chelmsford pick up their worst position since the club’s promotion to the National League South in 2008. The Clarets finished the season two places and five points clear of the relegation zone in what was a bleak campaign.

It looked like it was going to a long season for the Essex club who had only picked up two wins before Christmas.

However, City were able to pick up some form over the New Year period, and despite never really finding any solid consistency the Clarets did manage to stay up at the expense of local rivals Billericay Town.

So far at the EMG Inspire Stadium this summer: midfielder Chez Isaac has left to fellow National League South side St Albans City, Charlie Sheringham to Dartford and defender Christian Frimpong has also departed.

So far Robbie Simpson has brought in Liam Trotter, Jamie Yila and Devonte Aransibia, Jazzi Barnum-Bobb, Khale Da Costa, Charlie Ruff, Henry Ochieng and Harry Lodavica.

A lack of goals was a real problem for Chelmsford last season, with only Bath, Braintree, Tonbridge Angels and relegated Billericay netting less than the Clarets. So no new strikers arriving in North Essex is a concern.

Key Player

Simeon Jackson

Now 35 years of age the Jamaican born former Canadian international brings a vast amount of EFL and Premier League experience to Chelmsford.

Jackson was the Clarets’ top scorer last season bagging 11 goals.

After starting his career at Rushden & Diamonds, Jackson moved to Gillingham in 2008 where he made over 100 appearances, as well as scoring a playoff final winning goal to earn the Gills promotion to League One.

Jackson would leave Gillingham for then Championship side Norwich City, and two years after his playoff final heroics, Jackson netted the goal that promoted Norwich to the Premier League in a win over Portsmouth.

After two seasons of Premier League football with the Canaries, Jackson left Carrow Road in 2013 and has since played for a host of clubs including: Coventry City, Barnsley, Blackburn Rovers, Walsall, Grimsby Town, St Mirren, Kilmarnock and Stevenage, before joining Chelmsford February 2021.

Star Signing

Liam Trotter

Similarly, to Jackson, Liam Trotter will also bring a lot of experience to this young Chelmsford side.

Standing at 6 ft 4 in, Trotter started his career at Ipswich Town during which time he had loan spells with Grimsby, Scunthorpe United and Millwall, before joining the former permanently in 2010.

In four years, Trotter would make over 100 appearances for the Lions and has since played for the likes of: Bolton Wanderers, Nottingham Forest, AFC Wimbledon and American side Orange County SC.

Trotter joined the Clarets this summer following his departure from National League outfit Bromley.

Cheshunt

2021/22: 5th (Isthmian Premier Division)

Top Scorer: Reece Beckles-Richards and Rowan Liburd (14)

Manager: Craig Edwards

Stadium: Theobalds Lane (Capacity: 3,500)

2021/22 Average Attendance: 365

Last season was a memorable one for Cheshunt who won promotion to the National League South thanks to a playoff victory over Hornchurch.

After occupying the final playoff place the Ambers faced a tricky trip to Bishop’s Stortford in a playoff eliminator. Cheshunt would be victorious though with an injury time Taylor McKenzie strike giving the Ambers a shock 3-2 win.

This led to a playoff final against Hornchurch, which Craig Edward’s men won 2-1 thanks to a second half goal from Zack Newton.

So far, the Ambers have made some smart business securing the signatures of Dajon Golding, Will Seager, Brandon Adams and former Concord pair Joe Payne and Wyan Reid.

Survival will be the main objective for Cheshunt which can certainly be achieved with a few more arrivals.

Key Player

Rowan Liburd

Last season’s joint top scorer Rowan Liburd played a key role in Cheshunt’s promotion bagging 14 goals for the Ambers.

The 29-year-old started his career with Billericay before playing for a number of EFL sides including: Reading, Wycombe Wanderers, Leyton Orient and Stevenage.

Liburd has also played for fellow National League sides Dartford and Welling.

The Saint Kitts and Nevis international joined Cheshunt permanently in February 2022 following a successful loan spell.

Liburd has scored five times in nine caps for Saint Kitts and Nevis.

Star Signing

 Dajon Golding

Cheshunt have added further firepower to their attack this summer with the capture of Dajon Golding from Worthing, who got promoted from the same division as the Ambers last season.

Golding netted eight times on Worthing’s route to becoming Isthmian Premier Division Champions last term.

Golding has predominately played his trade in the Sussex region, appearing for East Sussex based clubs: Lewes and Hastings United, prior to joining Worthing in West Sussex.

Chippenham Town

2021/22: 7th

Top Scorer: Jordan Young (9)

Manager: Gary Horgan

Stadium: Hardenhuish Park (Capacity: 3,000)

2021/22 Average Attendance: 574

Last season was a fairy tale campaign for Chippenham with the Bluebirds surpassing all expectations by finishing in the playoffs.

A final day win away at a then seventh placed Havant and Waterlooville saw Gary Horgan’s men snatch the final playoff place, and set up a playoff eliminator against Dartford.

A playoff semi-final at Ebbsfleet United would await Chippenham who despite a brave performance were beaten 1-0 after extra time.

So far this summer defensive pair Kieran Parselle and Danny Greenslade have both left the club to local rivals Bath. In replacement the Bluebirds have brought in Eddie Jones and Matt Jones.

Also, Tom Mehew joins permanently following a successful loan spell from Bristol Rovers last season, with Joe Parker and Pablo Martinez also arriving at Hardenhuish Park.

It’s unlikely that Chippenham will achieve a top seven finish this term, however nobody expected them to do it last season.

Key Player

Joe Hanks

Renewing the services of midfielder Joe Hanks was a key piece of business done by the Bluebirds this summer.

The 27-year-old netted six times for Chippenham last season as he helped the Wiltshire based club to the playoffs.

Hanks started his career with Cheltenham Town, making just shy off 40 appearances for the Robins.

In 2016 Hanks departed Cheltenham for his home town club: Gloucester City, where he had had two loan spells previously.

Hanks joined Chippenham in May 2020 and has since established himself as a key player for the Bluebirds.

Star Signing

Tom Mehew

21-year-old midfielder Tom Mehew joined Chippenham permanently this summer following a successful loan spell from Bristol Rovers last season.

Mehew came through Rovers’ academy, making one appearance for the first team in a loss to Blackpool before getting released by the Gas this summer.

Mehew has also had loan spells with Bath, Gloucester and Swindon Supermarine.

Concord Rangers

2021/22: 14th

Top Scorer: Danny Green (14)

Manager: Chris Search

Stadium: Aspect Arena (Capacity: 3,300)

2021/22 Average Attendance: 420

Last campaign saw a solid start to Chris Search’s managerial career in a relatively stress-free season at the Aspect Arena, as Concord made it a decade in the sixth tier of English football.

A poor second half to the campaign saw the Beach Boys finish 14th having briefly flirted with the playoffs early in the season.

So far Search has added to a solid squad with the additions of goalkeeper Melvin Minter and former Tonbridge Angels pair Ricky Modeste and Teddy Perkins.

A lack of departures for Concord means stability will be likely with and an improved league position expected in South Essex.

Key Player

Danny Green

Last season’s top scorer Danny Green bagged 14 goals for the Beach Boys last term.

The 31-year-old joined Concord from Wealdstone last summer and the Beach Boys will need him to be just as prolific if they are to improve upon last season's finish.

The midfielder has also played for 16 clubs during his career such as: Dagenham & Redbridge, Dover Athletic, Boreham Wood and Wealdstone.

It was with the latter where he had the biggest impact, netting 40 times in over 200 appearances.

Star Signing

Ricky Modeste

Ricky Modeste was the Beach Boys second signing of the summer and he brings a wealth of experience with him.

The 34-year-old has vast non-league experience appearing for the likes of: Chelmsford, Dover, Billericay, Dartford and most recently Tonbridge Angels.

Modeste also has experience of the international game making several caps for Grenada; scoring two goals for The Spice Boys.

Dartford

2021/22: 4th

Top Scorer: Marcus Dinanga (13)

Manager: Alan Dowson

Stadium: Princes Park (Capacity: 4,100)

2021/22 Average Attendance: 1,337

Last season saw Dartford finish in the playoffs for the fifth time in six seasons, as the Darts National League absence stretches to seven seasons.

The season started well for Dartford with the Darts not losing a league game until the end of October, however consistency lacked later on in the campaign with Steve King’s men finishing 4th.

It would be another playoff loss at Princes Park with Dartford losing 3-2 on penalties to Chippenham.

Manager Steve King was sacked at the end of the season and has since been replaced by former Kingstonian manager Alan Dowson.

Business has been solid so far with Dowson signing defender Maxwell Statham from Welling, winger Luke Coulson from Bromley and Swiss striker Davide Rodari on loan from Crawley.

Strikers Alex Wall and Charlie Sheringham have both returned to Princes Park, both for their third spells with the club.

Key Player

Dan Wilks

A former Beach Boy, Dartford will need Dan Wilks to be in form if the Darts are to challenge for promotion again next season.

The 26-year-old kept 13 clean sheets for the Darts on their run to the playoffs - however he didn’t appear in the final five games of the season including the playoff loss to Chippenham.

Wilks was also named Supporter’s Player of the Season for 2021/22 as well.

Previously in his career Wilks has appeared for: Concord, Welling, Whitehawk and Maldon & Tiptree.

Star Signing

Charlie Sheringham

Son of former England and Manchester United striker Teddy, Charlie arrived for his third spell at Princes Park from Chelmsford this summer.

Last season was an impressive one for the striker as he scored nine goals in a poor Chelmsford side that finished 19th

The 34-year-old started his career with Crystal Palace and has since played for a number of sides including: Welling, AFC Bournemouth, AFC Wimbledon, Ebbsfleet and Hemel Hempstead prior to his arrival at Chelmsford last summer.

With extra support in a better side, it’s likely that Sheringham will improve upon the nine goals he netted last term and help Dartford to another high league position.

Dover Athletic

2021/22: 23rd  (National League)

Top Scorer: Alfie Pavey (6)

Manager: Andy Hessenthaler

Stadium: Crabble Stadium (Capacity: 5,745)

2021/22 Average Attendance: 857

Last season ended in an unsurprising relegation from the National League for Dover with the club finishing the season on one point.

The Whites started the season on –12 points as a punishment for not having the finances to complete the 2020/21 season and as a result finished bottom of the table with just two wins and over 100 goals conceded; failing to move off the foot of the table all season.

However, things look brighter for Andy Hessenthaler’s men this term with numerous new faces at the Crabble.

Jordan Higgs and Tyrone Sterling both join from Dulwich Hamlet and strikers Alex Pavey and Reece Grant arrive from fellow Kent club Maidstone.

Experience has been added to a young squad through the purchase of 40-year-old goalkeeper Stuart Nelson from Sutton United and 35-year-old Lee Martin from Ebbsfleet.

Alfie Paxman, Luke Wanadio, Arjanit Krasniqi, Mitch Brundle and Myles Judd have also arrived at the Crabble.

Key Player

Jake Goodman

Experienced defender Jake Goodman will provide a calm head to a pretty youthful Dover defence, and will have to play a key role if the Whites want to challenge for a National League return.

Starting his career at Millwall, Goodman made EFL appearances for AFC Wimbledon.

Goodman has played for a number of non-league clubs in his career such as: Aldershot Town, Margate, Braintree, Maidenhead, Bromley and Ebbsfleet.

The 28-year-old scored four goals last season.

Star Signing

Alfie Pavey

Last season’s top scorer Alfie Pavey joined the Whites permanently in the summer having been on loan at the Crabble from November till March last season.

After making his debut at the end of November, Pavey would go on to score against: King’s Lynn, Wealdstone, Dagenham & Redbridge, Eastleigh, Halifax and Wrexham before returning to his parent club Maidstone.

This will be the 26-year-old’s third spell with Dover having also played at the Crabble in 2018/19.

The one-time England C international will be hoping to make it back-to-back National League South promotions having helped Maidstone to the title last season.

Dulwich Hamlet

2021/22: 10th

Top Scorer: Danny Mills (13)

Manager: Gavin Rose

Stadium: Champion Hill (Capacity: 3,000)

2021/22 Average Attendance: 2,713

Last season was an arguably disappointing one at Champion Hill, as even though Dulwich Hamlet managed a top half finish it perhaps could've been even better.

The playoffs looked to be on the horizon for the Hamlet but a dismal run of form from March to the end of the season cost them; with Gavin Rose’s men winning just one of their final 12 games (beating Hemel Hempstead 2-1 on the final day).

Despite this poor form Dulwich remained just a place outside of the playoffs until April.

Both Jordan Higgs and Tyrone Sterling departed to Dover early in the window, but Dulwich have been quick to bring players in signing: Sam Deadfield, Kreshnic Krasniqi, James Comley, George Porter, Nana Owusu, Josh Hill, Joe Osaghae, Dan Smith, Will Wood, Frankie Raymond and Kalvin Kalala.

These additions add to a Dulwich squad that already has vast EFL as well as non-league experience an improvement on last year’s tenth placed finish is possible.

Key Player

Danny Mills

Last season’s top scorer, Danny Mills bagged 13 goals for the Hamlet in 2021/22.

Now 30 years of age the striker started his career at Crawley Town before getting a move to Peterborough United.

Mills spent three years at Peterborough during which time he enjoyed six loan spells, making only a handful of appearances for the Posh.

In 2012 Mills joined Whitehawk where he enjoyed a fantastic five years; making over 170 appearances scoring just shy of 100 goals for the Hawks.

Since leaving Whitehawk, Mills appeared for Ebbsfleet, Dartford and Welling before arriving at Champion Hill in 2019.

Star Signing

Nana Owusu

26-year-old winger Nana Owusu joined Dulwich this summer from fellow National League South side Oxford City.

Owusu was a regular starter for the Hoops last season as he helped City to the playoffs, scoring three times across the course of the season as well.

The 26-year-old came through the youth ranks at Reading before making a move to Basingstoke.

After an impressive season at Basingstoke the winger got a move to Maidenhead United where he spent two years before moving to Oxford.

Eastbourne Borough

2021/22: 6th

Top Scorer: Charley Kendall (25)

Manager: Danny Bloor

Stadium: Priory Lane (Capacity: 4,151)

2021/22 Average Attendance: 968

Last season was a fantastic season for Eastbourne that ended disappointingly.

In early April Danny Bloor’s men were 4th in the table however a poor end to the season saw the Sports finish 6th failing to win in their final six games; including a 7-2 loss at home to Dartford.

Going into the playoffs off the back of such poor form wasn’t ideal so it was unsurprising to see Eastbourne lose their playoff eliminator 2-0 at Oxford City.

So far Bloor has brought in: Alex Wynter, Kai Innocent, Simo Mbonkwi, James Vaughan, Shiloh Remy and Miquel Scarlett.

A new striker is necessary though as last season’s top scorer Charley Kendall was only on loan from League One side Lincoln City.

Key Player

Charlie Walker

Following Kendall’s departure to Sincil Bank the experienced Charlie Walker will need to step up for Eastbourne and become their main man in front of goal.

The 30-year-old scored a respectable nine goals for the Sports last season but there will be pressure on him to deliver even more this campaign.

Walker joined Eastbourne from St Albans in the summer of 2018 and has so far racked up over 100 appearances at Priory Lane

Star Signing

Alex Wynter

Defender Alex Wynter was Eastbourne’s first signing of the summer with the defender returning for his second spell at the club.

Wynter had a month-long loan spell at Priory Lane in 2013 during which time he made six appearances.

Since playing for Eastbourne, the 28-year-old has appeared for: Colchester, Portsmouth, Maidstone and Eastleigh.

Wynter has also made an appearance for the England C team.

Ebbsfleet United

2021/22: 3rd

Top Scorer: Dominic Poleon (17)

Manager: Dennis Kutrieb

Stadium: Kuflink Stadium (Capacity: 4,769)

2021/22 Average Attendance: 1,156

One of the early title favourites, Ebbsfleet will be determined to return to the National League, following last season’s playoff final heartbreak.

Dennis Kutrieb’s men finished fourth in the table and following a semi-final win over Chippenham, travelled to Dorking for the playoff final.

The Fleet looked to have won promotion when Craig Tanner put them 2-1 up two minutes into injury time, but in the ninth minute of added time Luke Moore scored for Dorking to make it 2-2.

The game would go to extra time with Dorking winning 3-2, subjecting Ebbsfleet to another season of sixth tier football.

It has been a busy summer so far at the Kuflink Stadium. Franklin Domi has joined the club permanently following a loan spell from QPR and he been joined by: former Gillingham pair Josh Wright and Luke O’Neill, goalkeeper Mark Cousins, Haydyn Hollis, Darren McQueen and midfield duo Kieran Monlouis and Omari Sterling-James.

Key Player

Dom Poleon

A seasoned professional with an abundance of EFL experience, Poleon was vital for Ebbsfleet last season bagging 17 goals for The Fleet making him the club’s top scorer.

Poleon started his youth career with Essex club Southend United before joining Yorkshire giants Leeds United in 2010. During his time at Elland Road Poleon had loan spells with Bury and Sheffield United before leaving The Whites permanently in 2014 for then League One side Oldham Athletic.

Since then, the 28-year-old has had spells with: AFC Wimbledon, Bradford City, Crawley Town, Newport County and Dover Athletic before the striker joined The Fleet following a successful trial.

Poleon’s goals were been vital for The Reds last season helping them achieve playoff football.

Poleon will need to be in form now more than ever if Ebbsfleet are to make a return to the National League.

Star Signing

Darren McQueen

Re-joining the Fleet for his third spell Darren McQueen signed for Ebbsfleet this summer from Dagenham & Redbridge.

Last season McQueen enjoyed a loan spell with fellow National League South side Dulwich Hamlet, scoring eight goals during his time at Champion Hill (one of which came against Ebbsfleet).

In his first spell at the Kuflink Stadium the 27-year-old scored 20 goals and he scored the winner in the playoff final to send Ebbsfleet to the National League.

During his time at Ebbsfleet McQueen also won two caps for England C.

Farnborough

2021/22: 3rd (Southern Premier Division South)

Top Scorer: Paul Hodges (15)

Manager: Spencer Day

Stadium: Cherrywood Road (Capacity: 7,000)

2021/22 Average Attendance: 502

A playoff final victory over Hayes & Yeading saw Farnborough book a National League South return last season following a seven season absence.

Following a third placed finish in the Southern Premier Division South, Boro faced the Metropolitan Police in a playoff semi-final; who they edged past 2-1 following extra time.

This set up a playoff final which the Yellows won by the same score line thanks to a late Sam Deering goal.

Manager Spencer Day has recruited quickly and recruited well so far this summer bringing in: Kevin Lokko, Ollie Robinson, Freddie Grant, Omar Rowe, Adeoye Olumuyiwa, Hisham Kasimu, Liam Ferdinand and Kenny Davis.

Survival is the main goal but a top half finish is certainly possible.

Key Player

Sam Deering

Sam Deering joined Boro last summer from National League side Dagenham & Redbridge and certainly made an impact scoring the winner goal in the Southern Premier Division South playoff final.

Deering started his career at Oxford United where he spent three years, making two England C caps in that time.

The 31-year-old also got an assist in the 2010 playoff final that saw the U’s win promotion to the football league in a 3-1 win over York City.

During his career the winger has also represented Barnet, Cheltenham, Whitehawk, Billericay and Ebbsfleet.

Star Signing

Kevin Lokko

In order to improve their defence ahead of the 2022/23 season Farnborough brought in centre back Kevin Lokko from Aldershot.

The 26-year-old brings a vast experience of non-league football having also played for the likes of: Welling, Maidstone and Dover.

Lokko also has EFL experience playing for Stevenage and Harrogate, he played EFL football for the latter as recently as the 2020/21 season.

Lokko joined Aldershot last summer before opting to leave the Shots for Farnborough this summer.

Hampton & Richmond Borough

2021/22: 11th

Top Scorer: Ruaridh Donaldson (8)

Manager: Gary McCann

Stadium: The Cleo Saul Beveree Stadium (Capacity: 3,500)

2021/22 Average Attendance: 669

Despite an impressive start to the season, the 2021/22 was a pretty quiet one at the Beveree Stadium.

The Beevers started the campaign with an eye catching 5-0 win at an Eastbourne side that would go on to finish in the playoffs.

Gary McCann’s men would find themselves in the playoffs up until the end of October, but from this point onwards poor form resulted in playoff hopes drying up.

The club didn’t find themselves any lower than 16th across the season and went on to record a top half finish; ending the campaign 11th.

Hampton & Richmond started their business early, bringing in: Luis Fernandez, Arthur Iontton and Tommy Wood. Since then, McCann has added Stefan Ilic, Connor Kurran-Browne, Ade Shokunbi, Alfy Whittingham and Cameron Black to the Beavers ranks. The latter arrives on loan from Dorking.

Goals were a big problem for Hampton last season with their top scorer, defender Ruaridh Donaldson, scoring just eight goals.

If they are to challenge for the playoffs, they need a more consistent goal scorer.

Key Player

Ruaridh Donaldson

Last season's top scorer Ruaridh Donaldson scored eight goals from defence for the Beavers in 2021/22 and the 28-year-old signed a new contract in the summer.

Last season was an impressive one for the ever-present Scotsman and it ended well with four goals in the final four games of the season.

Hampton are the only English club that Donaldson has played for, with the left back having only previously played his trade in his home country representing: Forfar West End, Tayport, Bonnyrigg and Stenhousemuir.

Now starting his fourth season with Hampton and Richmond, Donaldson will need to stay in form if the Beavers are to challenge for the playoffs.

Star Signing

Tommy Wood

Striker Tommy Wood joined Hampton & Richmond this summer from Tonbridge Angels, who he was top scorer for last season.

The 23-year-old scored 12 goals in Kent before departing the Angels to join the Beavers, and Wood will play a vital role in being Hampton’s main source of goals.

Wood came through the youth ranks at Burnley before moving to AFC Wimbledon. However, Wood only made three appearances for the then League Two club, spending most of his time at the Wombles out on loan.

Wood did bag one goal when at Wimbledon, scoring against Southend United in the Papa John’s Trophy.

In October 2020 Wood joined Tonbridge permanently having had a successful loan spell with the Angels the previous season.

Havant and Waterlooville

2021/22: 8th

Top Scorer: Tommy Wright and Jake McCarthy (7)

Manager: Paul Doswell

Stadium: The Westleigh (Capacity: 5,300)

2021/22 Average Attendance: 1,177

Another early season title favourite Havant and Waterlooville will be looking to go one further this season after just missing out on the playoffs last term on the final day.

Havant came into that last game inside the playoffs as they entertained a Chippenham side who were one place below them.

Unfortunately for the Hawks they fell to a defeat as a brace from Jordan Young sealed a 2-0 win for Chippenham who leapfrogged Havant into the top seven.

This summer Paul Doswell has recruited well as Havant looked to eye up a top seven finish.

Experienced striker Jason Prior joins the Hawks’ ranks having scored nine goals last season as he helped Dorking to promotion.

37-year-old forward Danny Wright joins from Torquay, another experienced striker who has over 300 National League appearances on his CV.

They have been joined by Gianni Crichlow from Braintree, Joash Nembhard from Hemel Hempstead and Jake Andrews who also comes in from Torquay.

Doswell has added to a strong spine so an improvement upon last season’s 8th placed finish is expected.

Key Player

Tommy Wright

Last season’s joint top scorer, Tommy Wright netted seven goals for the Hawks and the 25-year-old will need to be even more prolific if he’s to not only fire Havant up the table, but also if he’s to keep his place in the starting eleven.

Despite being the Hawks’ top scorer Wright failed to score from the end of January through to the end of the season with his last goal coming in a 1-1 draw with Billericay on January 22nd.

Wright started his career with Sutton where he spent three seasons, appearing over 80 times the Yellows.

In 2020 Wright left Gander Green Lane to join Havant and Waterlooville.

Star Signing

Jason Prior

The signing of Jason Prior has certainly been one of the most impressive signings in the National League South this summer, with the experienced striker joining the Hawks having won promotion from this division with Dorking last season.

Returning for his second spell at The Westleigh, the 33-year-old previously appeared for the Hawks between 2016 and 2018; in which time he made 80 appearances before joining Dorking.

During his three years in Surrey, Prior made over 100 appearances scoring 68 times.

Prior scored nine goals last season during Dorking’s promotion campaign before re-joining the Hawks this summer

Hemel Hempstead

2021/22: 15th

Top Scorer: Charlee Hughes (8)

Manager: Mark Jones

Stadium: Vauxhall Road (Capacity: 3,152)

2021/22 Average Attendance: 595

Last season was a pretty poor one for the Tudors who despite a poor start to the season managed to stay up convincingly in the end.

A dire start saw the Tudors lose all of their first five games including a 6-0 drubbing at home to Dulwich Hamlet.

This resulted in manager Lee Bircham being sacked with Mark Jones replacing him in the dugout.

Results did then improve and a top half finish looked to be on the cards for Jones’ men but a poor finish costed them; with no wins in their final five games resulting in a 15th placed finish.

So far the Tudors have brought in: Josh Lelan, Jernade Meade, Godfrey Poku, Ryan Hope, Jordy Mongoy, Dara Dada, Bayley Brown, Jordan Greenidge, Cole Dasila, Kory Roberts and Bradley Webb.

Key Player

Charlee Hughes

Last season’s top scorer Charlee Hughes became Hemel Hempstead’s lead talisman following his December arrival from Maldon & Tiptree.

Hughes made an instant impact scoring six goals in his first eight games including a spell which saw him score in five consecutive game against: St Albans, Ebbsfleet, Bath, Tonbridge Angels and Hungerford.

The Tudors will need Hughes this form if they are to improve upon last season's finish.

Star Signing

Jernade Meade

29-year-old defender Jernade Meade joined the Tudors following his release from Dartford this summer, and the former Arsenal man brings Champions League experience to Vauxhall Road.

In December 2012 Meade made his first start for the Gunners in a Champions League clash away to Olympiacos; a game that finished 2-1 to the Greek side.

Meade would be released at the end of the season and be snapped up by fellow Premier League side Swansea City. However, the full back struggled to impress during his time in Wales and was released in the summer.

Since then he has had spells in Scandinavia, playing in Norway and Sweden before spending two seasons with Dartford.

Hungerford Town

2021/22: 12th

Top Scorer: Ryan Seager (27)

Manager: Danny Robinson

Stadium: Bulpit Lane (Capacity: 3,034)

2021/22 Average Attendance: 466

Last season was a solid one for Hungerford who finished safely in mid-table during a season in which they had flirted with the playoffs; the Crusaders were in the playoffs as late as April before failing to win any of their final seven games.

The Crusaders were dealt a huge blow this summer when last season’s top scorer Ryan Seager departed for National League side Dorking, and his 27 goals will need replacing.

Danny Robinson has brought in attackers: Niko Muir, Adam Liddle and Leighton Thomas to fill the gap left by Seager.

Also arriving at Bulpit Lane are former Concord midfielder Ben Allen, Kameron English, Jeremiah Gyebi and goalkeepers Marcus Beauchamp and Mark Scott.

Key Player

Jake Evans

Midfielder Jake Evans was ever present for Hungerford last season appearing in every game bar five, and it comes as no surprise that the Crusaders won just one game without the 24-year-old.

During the 2021/22 season Evans also popped up with six goals despite predominantly playing in a defensive midfield position.

Evans arrived at Bulpit Lane in December 2020 from Cardiff City, and has previously played for fellow National League South sides Farnborough and Hemel Hempstead.

Star Signing

Ben Allen

A former Beach Boy, Ben Allen arrived at Bulpit Lane from fellow National League South club Welling this summer.

Allen started the season with Welling before joining Concord in October where he scored on his debut in a 3-2 win over Tonbridge Angels, before netting on his second appearance for the Beach Boys in a loss at Havant and Waterlooville.

The 21-year-old would return to Welling in February and the midfielder helped the Wings complete the great escape.

Across last season Allen scored five goals.

Oxford City

2021/22: 5th

Top Scorer: Joe Iaciofano (22)

Manager: Ross Jenkins

Stadium: Court Place Farm (Capacity: 3,000)

2021/22 Average Attendance: 619

Last season was an impressive one for Oxford City with the Hoops reaching the playoff semi-finals before losing to a Dorking side that would go on to win promotion.

City were able to stay in the playoffs from January all the way to the end of the season, despite manager David Oldfield departing the club for Weymouth earlier in the year.

The Hoops finished 5th earning a place in the playoffs, where they beat an out of form Eastbourne Borough 2-0 setting up a semi-final clash with Dorking.

Unfortunately, Ross Jenkins’ men were unable to keep out the division’s top scorers losing 3-0, confirming another season of sixth tier football at Court Place Farm.

Oxford have been efficient in the transfer market so far with Andre Burley, Klaidi Lolos, Tom Harrison, Lewis Miccio, Jean-Baptiste Fischer and Aaron Williams-Bushell arriving at Court Place Farm this summer.

Defensive pair Harry Kyprianou and Dan Matsuzaka have both departed to Weymouth and 19-year-old attacker Ewan Clark has jumped four divisions to sign for Championship side Bristol City.

Key Player

Ben Dudzinski

Oxford’s number one, Dudzinski signed a contract extension this summer following an impressive campaign for the Hoops last term.

Ever present, the 26-year-old only missed one game for City last season, keeping 14 clean sheets for the Hoops.

Starting his career at Durham City, Dudzinski went on to play for fellow North East clubs Hartlepool United and Darlington before spells with Lowestoft, Havant and Waterlooville and Sutton United.

Dudzinski joined Oxford in 2020 and has been a fan favourite ever since.

Star Signing

Andre Burley

Defender Andre Burley joined the Hoops from League One side Wycombe in June.

The 22-year-old from St Kitts and Nevis had loan spells with Maidenhead United and Hungerford last season, whilst also making two appearances for his parent club Wycombe in the Papa John’s Trophy and two appearances in the Carabao Cup.

Burley will be needed to fill the gaps left by departing defenders Kyprianou and Matsuzaka.

The 22-year-old has seven St Kitts and Nevis caps to his name.

Slough Town

2021/22: 13th

Top Scorer: Alfonso Tenconi (9)

Managers: Neil Baker and John Underwood

Stadium: Arbour Park (Capacity: 2,000)

2021/22 Average Attendance: 683

Despite a shaky start to last season Slough were able to finish safely in midtable in what was their eight full season under joint managers Neil Baker and Jon Underwood.

The season started with one win from nine which left the Rebels rock bottom of the table; however, this was followed up with five straight wins as Slough finished in mid table.

A lack of consistency was a real problem for the Rebels lasts season and Baker and Underwood have strengthened the squad with the arrivals of: defenders Guy Hollis and George Wells, midfielders James Dobson and Johnny Goddard and experienced striker Elliot Benyon.

The departure of last season’s top scorer Alfonso Tenconi to American side Stanford Cardinal will be a blow.

If Slough are to improve upon last season’s 13th placed finish, then finding consistency will be vital.

Key Player

Aaron Kuhl

26-year-old Aaron Kuhl played a key role for Slough last term, with the midfielder netting six times for the Rebels.

The Somerset born midfielder came through the ranks at Reading, making six league appearances for the Royals’ first team before being released in 2017.

Following a long break from football due to injury Kuhl would sign for Basingstoke in 2019, joining Slough just a month later.

Star Signing

John Goddard

Summer signing from St Albans, Johnny Goddard arrives at Arbour Park having scored seven goals for the Saints last season – one of which came against Slough.

The 29-year-old started his career at then sixth tier Hayes & Yeading before enjoying EFL experience with Swindon Town and Stevenage.

The winger has also played for: Bromley, Aldershot, Ebbsfleet and Woking; Goddard also has two England C caps.

Goddard was St Albans second highest scorer last season with only Shaun Jeffers scoring more.

St Albans City

2021/22: 9th

Top Scorer: Shaun Jeffers (27)

Manager: Ian Allinson

Stadium: Clarence Park (Capacity: 5,007)

2021/22 Average Attendance: 1,312

Last season saw St Albans just miss out on the playoffs finishing ninth having occupied a playoff place as late as April.

The 2021/22 campaign also saw the Saints go on a fine FA Cup run reaching the second round.

In the first round proper the Saints stunned League Two side Forest Green 3-2 in front of the television cameras thanks to a late Shaun Jeffers strike.

Unfortunately for Ian Allinson’s men they would be knocked out in the second round following a 4-0 thumping by National League side Boreham Wood.

So far this summer Tafari Moore, Chris Paul, Chez Isaac and Munashe Sundire have all arrived at Clarence Park.

If St Albans are to get into the playoffs this season they’ll need to repeat their form between the end of August and the end of October; going nine games unbeaten in all competitions.

Key Player

Shaun Jeffers

Renewing the services of last season’s top scorer Shaun Jeffers this summer was arguably the best business St Albans undertook.

Jeffers scored 27 goals in 38 league appearances, featuring two hat-tricks against Welling and Billericay respectively.

The 30-year-old came through the youth ranks at Coventry City, making six appearances for the Sky Blues.

Jeffers also has EFL experience from his time with Cheltenham, Peterborough, Newport and Yeovil.

The striker has also previously been prolific at this level with Chelmsford who he joined St Albans from in 2020.

Star Signing

Munashe Sundire

25-year-old Munashe Sundire joined St Albans from King’s Lynn this summer for his second spell at Clarence Park.

The midfielder from Zimbabwe appeared 33 times in the National League last season scoring one goal; a late winner away at Yeovil in August.

Sundire previously played for the Saints between November 2019 and July 2021 following an arrival from Hemel Hempstead.

Sundire can play as either a midfielder or a right back.

Taunton Town

2021/22: 1st (Southern Premier Division South)

Top Scorer: Toby Holmes (17)

Manager: Rob Dray

Stadium: Cygnet Health Care Stadium (Capacity: 2,500)

2021/22 Average Attendance: 751

Last season was a historic one for Taunton who won promotion to the National League South for the first time in their history.

A late Jay Foulston strike against Farnborough gave Taunton a 2-1 win and promotion in front of over 2,000 fans.

So far business has been okay at the Cygnet Health Care Stadium. Young goalkeeper Will Buse returns for a second loan spell with the Peacocks.

Defenders Will Tunnicliff and Dan Ball have signed, as well as attackers David Sims-Burgess, Nathaniel Jarvis and Nick McCootie.

The departure of last season’s top scorer Toby Holmes to Poole Town is a blow for the Peacocks.

Rob Dray may need to bring in some more players however if Taunton are to survive.

Key Player

Lee Lucas

A former Carling Cup winner 30-year-old Lee Lucas is arguably the most experienced player in the Taunton ranks; and this experience will be vital if the Peacocks are to have a successful first season at this level.

The Welsh midfielder came through the youth ranks at Swansea City, making one first team appearance for the Swans in a 4-0 win over Sheffield United.

During his time at the Liberty Stadium, Lucas had loan spells with Cheltenham Town and Burton Albion, however injuries thwarted his progress and the Welshman was released in 2016.

He then moved up to Scotland to play for Motherwell where once again injuries decreased his play time.

After two years with Welsh club Merthyr Town, Lucas joined Taunton in 2020.

If he can avoid injuries the 30-year-old will be an influential player for the Peacocks.

Star Signing

Nathaniel Jarvis

Experienced striker Nathaniel Jarvis has been brought in to fill the gap left by departing top scorer Toby Holmes.

The Welsh born Antigua and Barbuda international started his career at Cardiff City where he had loan spells with: Southend United, Newport County, Forest Green Rovers and Kidderminster Harriers.

Since 2013 the 30-year-old has played his football for a number of non-league clubs such as: Brackley Town, Bath City (across two spells), Gloucester City, Cirencester Town, Hungerford Town and Chippenham Town.

From 2020 onwards Jarvis played for Welsh Premiership club Barry Town who were relegated to Cymru South last season.

Jarvis has scored three goals for Antigua and Barbuda.

Tonbridge Angels

2021/22: 16th

Top Scorer: Tommy Wood (12)

Manager: Jay Saunders

Stadium: Longmead Stadium (Capacity: 3,000)

2021/22 Average Attendance: 833

Last season was a poor one for Tonbridge Angels who spent the majority of the campaign near the bottom of the table; the Angels failed to climb higher than 14th across the entire season.

You got the impression it was going to be a long season at Longmead, when the Angels were battered 5-1 by Ebbsfleet on opening day, however winning their final two games did allow Tonbridge to climb a few places in the table and make their league position look less worrying.

Manager Steve McKimm departed the club at the end of the season and was replaced by former Maidstone and Margate boss Jay Saunders.

The summer got off to a frustrating start for the Angels, when last season’s top scorer Tommy Wood departed for fellow National League South club Hampton & Richmond.

So far Saunders has brought in former Margate trio: Ben Swift, Fyn Rutherford and Louis Collins; who have been joined by Tommie Fagg, Mason Saunders-Henry, Lewis Gard and Femi Akinwande. The latter scored eight goals for relegated Billericay last season.

Key Player

Craig Braham-Barrett

34-year-old defender, Craig Braham-Barrett brings some much needed experience to what is an otherwise a predominately young squad.

Braham-Barrett began his career with a host of non-league sides: Aveley, Dulwich Hamlet, Potters Bar, Eastleigh, East Thurrock and Welling prior to an EFL move to Peterborough United.

Braham-Barret joined Tonbridge from Dartford last season, and the full back has also made 18 caps for the Montserrat national team.

Star Signing

Femi Akinwande

Following the departure of last season’s top scorer Tommy Wood to Hampton & Richmond the arrival of striker Femi Akinwande from Billericay is a vital one for the Angels.

A former Beach Boy, the 26-year-old scored eight league goals for Ricay last term.

Akinwande has also played for fellow National League South sides: Dartford and Braintree, as well as Concord and the attacker has made EFL appearances with Colchester United and Stevenage.

If Akinwande could manage 8 goals with a relegated Billericay, he should be able to hit double figures with extra support.

Welling United

2021/22: 20th

Top Scorer: Dipo Akinyemi (18)

Manager: Warren Feeney

Stadium: Park View Road (Capacity: 4,000)

2021/22 Average Attendance: 667

Last season saw Welling complete the great escape, confirming their survival with a game to spare following a 3-2 win over already promoted Maidstone United, and so far this summer progress looks likely.

Warren Feeney’s men had been bottom with just six games to go, but only two defeats in their final five games paired with Billericay going seven games without a win across March and April was enough to seal Welling’s survival.

The Wings have brought in many eye-catching arrivals including: Ade Azeez, Stefan Payne, Manny Parry and Rob Howard, all of who have played at a higher level in recent times.

Other arrivals are: Taylor Curran, Rob Strachan, Taofiq Olomowewe, Taylor Maloney, Tyrique Hyde, Ashley Nzala and Prince Adegoke; the latter joins on loan from Chelsea.

The departure of last season’s top scorer Dipo Akinyemi to Scottish outfit Ayr United is a big loss for the Wings.

If Welling are to progress under Warren Feeney then they’ll need to improve their away form in particular; the Wings won just three times on their travels last season.

Key Player

Aaron Barnes

A summer signing last year from Dulwich Hamlet, full back Aaron Barnes brings a cool and composed head to the Wings’ defence.

The 25-year-old only missed a handful of games for Welling last season and popped up with one goal; in what proved to be a crucial win over Billericay.

Barnes played for both Arsenal’s and Charlton’s academies; making one first team appearance for the Addicks as a sub against Swindon Town.

This was followed by a move to Colchester where he made a handful of appearances in the Papa John’s Trophy before moving to Dulwich in 2019 where he spent two seasons.

Star Signing

Ade Azeez

28-year-old striker Ade Azeez joined Welling from Dartford this summer who he scored 11 goals for last season, and Azeez will be needed to be on form in order to replace the hole left by the departing Akinyemi.

The striker scored a brace against the Wings last season for Dartford in a 6-0 win for the Darts at Park View Road.

The former England Under 19 international has EFL experience with the likes of: AFC Wimbledon, Cambridge United and Newport County; and Welling will need Azeez to use all his experience if he and the Wings are to have a successful season.

Weymouth

2021/22: 22nd (National League)

Top Scorer: Josh McQuoid (7)

Manager: David Oldfield

Stadium: Bob Lucas Stadium (Capacity: 6,600)

2021/22 Average Attendance: 1,208

Last term saw Weymouth relegated back to the National League South after two seasons in the fifth tier.

The Terras managed back-to-back promotions to the National League across the 2018/19 and 2019/20 seasons, and David Oldfield’s men will be hoping for a speedy return to the National League.

Weymouth spent the majority of last season in the drop zone and despite the appointment of Oldfield in January, the Terras still suffered relegation; Weymouth also endured a 15 game winless run between February and May of last season.

The Terras come into the season with a relatively new squad following the arrivals of: Jack Seddon, Nathan Carlyle, Luke Nippard, Claudio Ofosu, Keelan O’Connell and former Oxford City pair Harry Kyprianou and Dan Masuzaka

If Weymouth are to challenge for a speedy return to the National League then they’ll need to find a new goal scorer; last season’s top scorer Josh McQuoid left the Terras this summer for Aldershot Town.

Key Player

Tom Bearwish

With the departure of top scorer McQuoid, striker Tom Bearwish will need to step up and become a key source of goals for the Terras.

The 22-year-old scored three goals for Weymouth last season against: Bromley, Notts County and Wrexham.

A summer signing from Eastleigh last summer, Bearwish came through the youth ranks with the Spitfires before his move to Dorset; scoring two goals for Eastleigh in his breakthrough season in 2019/20.

If Weymouth are to challenge at the top end of the table, then Bearwish’s goals will be vital.

Star Signing

Harry Kyprianou

A summer signing from Oxford City, Harry Kyprianou was part of the Hoops squad that reached the playoffs last season.

A former Cyprus under 21 international, Kyprianou began his career with Southend scoring on his debut against Brighton’s under 23’s in the EFL Trophy. The 25-year-old then followed this up with a goal on his league debut in a 1-1 draw at Bolton Wanderers.

The defender was part of the Southend squads that got relegated from both League One and League Two in back-to-back seasons, before getting released by the Shrimpers following their relegation to the National League.

Weymouth will be hoping that the Cypriot can bring all his former EFL experience to the table and help the Terras challenge for a swift return to the fifth tier.

Worthing

2021/22: 1st (Isthmian Premier Division)

Top Scorer: Ollie Pearce (35)

Manager: Adam Hinshelwood

Stadium: Woodside Road (Capacity: 4,000)

2021/22 Average Attendance: 1,333

Last season saw Worthing finally win promotion to the National League South having previously been denied promotion by the pandemic.

A dominant season for the Rebels saw them seal promotion with three games left to play following a 2-0 win at Bowers & Pitsea.

The Mackerel Men will be hoping the wait was worth it, and so far have brought in: Jake Robinson, Adam El-Abd, Lewis White, Callum Kealy and Kane Wills.

Home grown winger Jasper Pattenden left the club for an eye catching move to Wycombe and Dajon Golding has left to division rivals Cheshunt.

Worthing will be hoping they have enough to survive this season.

Key Player

Ollie Pearce

Last season’s top scorer Ollie Pearce bagged an impressive 35 goals en route to promotion for Worthing.

The 26-year-old joined the Rebels in 2019 from local rivals Bognor Regis and has so far had an extremely positive influence at Woodside Road.

Earlier on his career Pearce was part of the Bognor side that reached the semi-final of the 2016 FA Trophy, losing 3-1 on aggregate to eventual runners up Grimsby Town.

If Worthing are to have a positive first season back in the sixth tier, then Pearce will be needed to be just as prolific.

Star Signing

Jake Robinson

Experienced striker Jake Robinson joined Worthing from Dartford this summer, who he scored ten goals for last season.

The 35-year-old brings a vast quantity of both EFL and non-league experience with him to Woodside Road, having previously played for 11 other clubs in his career.

Robinson has recently been prolific at Billericay, scoring 57 goals for Ricay across the 2017/18 season.

The striker started his career with Brighton who he made over 100 appearances for before playing more EFL football with the likes of: Shrewsbury Town, Torquay United and Northampton Town.

Robinson has scored goals consistently at almost every club he has played for, so looks to be a shrewd piece of business from the Mackerel Men.
