Concord Rangers 1
Concord made it two wins from two as a first half Ben Williamson penalty secured a 1-0 win over recently promoted Taunton in the first ever league meeting between the two sides.
Taunton’s Jack Bycroft was the first goalkeeper to be tested just past the half hour mark. Nana Kyei cut inside from the left and curled a low effort towards goal. The Southampton loanee parried the ball away straight into the path of Lewis Johnson, who saw his side footed effort hit the side netting.
However, two minutes later the Beach Boys were able to take the lead when Johnson was tripped in the area by Jake Wannell. The experienced Ben Williamson stepped up and, just like he did against Southend in pre-season, powered home his penalty sending Bycroft the wrong way.
Chris Search’s men nearly doubled their lead just before half time. Ricky Modeste clipped in a cross to the far post which broke kindly for Ben Search, who saw his low drive cleared off the line by Lloyd James. This caused an almighty scramble in the six-yard area which ended with Kyei firing an effort just wide.
Following a quiet first half the visitors went close to snatching an equaliser early in the second. Wannell’s cross from the left picked out an unmarked Nick McCootie in the area. The 33-year-old flicked the ball towards goal but was denied by a superb reaction save from Melvin Minter – keeping Concord’s slender lead intact.
Not long later the Beach Boys went inches away from doubling their lead, when a deflected strike from Williamson broke kindly to Johnson. However, the MK Dons loanee dragged his effort narrowly wide of the target.
Taunton found themselves unable to produce any threatening attacks and the Beach Boys held on to secure back-to-back 1-0 wins.
A win for Concord means they rise to third in the division (joining Dartford and Ebbsfleet as the only sides with a 100% start to the season), also a 1-0 win sees Concord secure their first clean sheet at the Aspect Arena since January.
Meanwhile for Taunton defeat means they remain winless and goalless.
Chris Search’s men return to action on Tuesday night as an unbeaten Dulwich Hamlet side come to the Aspect Arena following a 1-1 draw with Farnborough this afternoon.
