The EMG Inspire Stadium
National League South
Saturday 9th April
Chelmsford City 1
Tonbridge Angels 1
Chelmsford City’s winless run stretched to nine games as a second half Adam Coombe’s free kick for Tonbridge ensured a share of the spoils at The EMG Inspire Stadium, with the two clubs drawing 1-1 for the second time this season.
The visitors from Kent dominated the opening stages in Essex with Joe Turner flashing a volley just over for The Angels following good hold up play by top scorer Tommy Wood.
Ten minutes later and Steve McKimm’s men went within a whisker of opening the scoring. A Jerry O’Sullivan cross from the right was met by Adam Coombes, but the 30-year-old saw his glancing header go across the face of goal and just wide.
Within seven minutes the deadlock was broken with the hosts taking a surprise lead. A Tom Blackwell corner to the far post wasn’t dealt with well enough by Tonbridge allowing Adebola Oluwo to pounce from close range for his second strike of the season.
However, Tonbridge reacted swiftly and very nearly equalised just a minute later. Turner dinked the ball over Chelmsford goalkeeper Kai McKenzie-Lyle, but Cameron James came to The Clarets rescue getting back to head the ball off the line; ensuring City would go in at the break a goal to the good.
Tonbridge started the second period the better side and equalised five minutes into the half. Coombes took a right footed free kick 20 yards from goal that curled delightfully into the top corner, out of the reach of Cambridge loanee McKenzie-Lyle.
A point for Chelmsford continues their dismal run of form with The Clarets remaining 19th in the table. For Tonbridge a point means their winless away run continues (The Angels last won away in early February) and their recent poor record against Chelmsford goes on- winning only one of their last six meetings with City.
