Notts County moved to within six points of league leaders Walsall with a professional 2-0 win at home to struggling Morecambe.

Following a goalless opening period, the Magpies struck twice after the interval with goals from Charlie Whitaker and Alassana Jatta securing a third straight win.

Kick-Off

The hosts started on the front foot and went close twice in the opening ten minutes.

First, a Matt Palmer corner was only partially cleared by Morecambe as far as Curtis Edwards whose 20 yard effort was parried away by former County goalkeeper Ryan Schofield.

Three minutes later, and from another set-piece, a Jodi Jones delivery was headed wide by Jatta.

Despite sitting 20 places below County prior to kick-off, Morecambe had the best chance of the first half.

David Tutonda played a great pass across the box to Lee Angol who had his shot saved at his near post by Alex Bass.

Half Time: Notts County 0-0 Morecambe

The second half started evenly with both sides threatening an opening goal.

For the visitors Andy Dallas had a shot deflect harmlessly into the arms of Bass, and then not long after the Barnsley loanee again went close, curling a shot off target after good hold up play by Marcus Dackers.

At the other end Whitaker fired straight at Schofield.

The Shrimps were holding on well but just past the hour mark their resistance was finally broken.

A low cross from Will Jarvis was parried away by Schofield, but only as far as Whitaker and the 21-year-old slammed the ball home for his first goal in County colours since joining from Everton last month.

Morecambe were unlucky not to draw level seven minutes later with Dackers being denied by the feet of Bass after Callum Cooke had slipped a neat pass in behind for the Salford loanee.

With just under 15 minutes left to play the Magpies doubled their lead to ensure their unbeaten run would stretch to six games.

Jatta got onto a long ball over the top and the Gambian international shrugged off two Morecambe defenders before taking the ball around Schofield and rolling it into the bottom corner for his 17th goal of the campaign.

The Magpies nearly added gloss to the scoreline almost instantly after this but Conor Grant was well kept out by Schofield after being picked out at the far post by a Kellan Gordon cross.
