Hullbridge Sports 2
Wroxham 3
Wroxham secured their first three points of the season as goals from Matt Hayden, Ryan Hawkins and Ryan Miles secured victory over Hullbridge Sports, despite an injury time brace from Sonny Dutton.
The first half was pretty quiet at Lower Road, but it was the visitors that would go in at the break 1-0 up. Conley Poynter swung in a corner which was met by Hayden who stooped down to head the ball into the bottom corner leaving Hullbridge goalkeeper Lewis Greene rooted to the spot. This strike was Hayden’s sixth of a so far solid season for the former Brantham Athletic striker – ensuring the Yachtsmen went in at the break a goal to the good.
Wroxham started the second period in a similarly dominant fashion to the first and five minutes into the half Jordan Southgate’s men doubled their lead. Hayden brought down a long ball nicely and laid it off to Ryan Curtis who slid the ball in behind for Hawkins, and Wroxham’s number 10 fired the ball across goal and into the far-right corner.
The rest of the half was pretty drab with no real chances for either side as Wroxham looked to see the game out but there would be some late drama in Essex.
With one minute left on the clock the Yachtsmen were gifted possession allowing Hayden to slip the ball inside to substitute Miles who found himself one-on-one with Greene, and last season’s top scorer fired home for his sixth of the campaign – a goal that ensures Miles remains Wroxham’s joint top scorer alongside Hayden.
The visitor’s three goal advantage didn’t last long however and within a minute the Sports had the ball in the back of the visiting goal. Harry Honesty burst down the left wing before dragging a cross back into Sonny Dutton who slammed an effort that went off the bar and in to offer Hullbridge a faint glimmer of hope and to deny Wroxham of a first away clean sheet of the campaign.
Then just two minutes later the Bridge had a second goal. A Hullbridge cross was only partially cleared as far as Dutton just inside the area who drilled the ball across goal and into the far corner of Tom Coombe’s goal to make it 2-3.
However, it was all too little too late for Hullbridge and Wroxham held on for a 3-2 win.
Defeat for the Sports means their three-game unbeaten run comes to an end. Robert Moore and Stephen Southgate’s men remain 16th in the table but now they’re only one point clear of Wroxham.
Three points for Wroxham means they finally have that first league success as they stretch their unbeaten run in all competitions to three games.
Both sides return to action this Saturday with Hullbridge hosting league leaders Lowestoft Town, and Wroxham entertaining East Thurrock United.
