Rookery Hill
Isthmian Premier Division
Saturday 12th March
East Thurrock 2
Kingstonian 1
Action from the game |
East Thurrock came from behind to claim a vital 2-1 victory over Kingstonian at Rookery Hill as a Johnny Ashman brace was enough to see The Rocks edge the K’s, and also inflict a sixth straight loss on their London based opponents.
The Rocks nearly took the lead within five minutes as Ruben Carvalho dinked the ball over the top for skipper Oliver Spooner whose effort bounced off the foot of the post.
However, it was the visitors who struck first through the experienced Kenny Beaney. Unmarked at the back post The K’s midfielder had the simple task of tapping home Nyren Clunis’ cross from close range to give Kingstonian the lead.
The Rocks were fortunate not to go in at the break two goals down as goalkeeper Arthur Janata made a fine save to ensure the score stayed 0-1. It was Beaney who rose highest but the 21-year-old in the home goal scrambled across to tip the ball away superbly.
The second half started slowly but East Thurrock were able to level the scores just before the hour mark. The ball broke kindly in the area to Ashman and the West Ham academy graduate turned before firing home into the bottom corner.
Then with just six minutes left on the clock Ashman popped up again to complete the turnaround. A quickly taken drop kick by Janata released Ashman who raced through on goal and slotted the ball past visiting goalkeeper Julian Schwarzer.
It looked to be late heartbreak for East Thurrock as in injury time Kingstonian appeared to have scored but the goal was chalked off for offside. A cross from Clunis found former Maidstone and Woking man Fabio Saraiva at the far post who tapped home. However, the assistant’s flag came to The Rocks’ rescue.
A win for East Thurrock sees them get revenge for their 6-0 loss to Kingstonian back in October and also sees The Rocks pick up their fourth home win of the league season, but they remain 21st in the table. Defeat for Kingstonian means they have now gone nine games without picking up a win.
